Positive Attitude

Attitude is state of mind that shows in the way you think and act. A person with a positive attitude:

  • Expects success
  • Thinks in terms of what they can do
  • Looks at things creatively
  • Chooses happiness
  • Is motivated to reach goals
  • Does not give up on things that are important
  • Sees failure and problems as something to learn from
  • Believes in his or her abilities
  • Acts with confidence

How do I develop a positive attitude?

  • Start by making a list of all the things you like about yourself. Put it where you can see it often. This helps to remind you of all your good qualities.
  • Set goals based on what you want, not what someone else wants. Set small goals and reach them.
  • Visualize what you want to happen.
  • Use self-talk that inspires and motivates you. Check often at first to make sure that you aren’t using negative self-talk.
  • Avoid people who criticize or put others down. Surround yourself with happy, supportive people.
  • Find things to be grateful for rather than blaming or complaining.
  • Learn and practice meditation.
  • Read inspiring stories and quotes.
  • Exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and learn positive ways to manage stress.
  • Look for reasons to smile and laugh often.
  • Volunteer to help others.

Sometimes people compare themselves to people they see in videos or on television shows, where everyone has money, an easy life, and great relationships. In the real world, many people feel they don’t measure up. Instead of focusing on what we do not have, we can focus on what we do have. This takes practice and effort.

What are the benefits?

When you have a positive attitude, you usually have better relationships with others. You can get more done. A positive attitude helps you lead a fuller, more satisfying life. If you have a positive attitude, you are usually optimistic and expect others to like you. You are better able to manage life’s struggles.

In contrast, if you think poorly of yourself, you may not trust others. You may be afraid to try doing things that could bring you success. People with a negative attitude may fall into destructive behavior and may get along poorly with friends and family.

A positive attitude may also offer health benefits, such as:

  • Less depression
  • Better ability to manage stress
  • Fewer colds
  • Less risk of dying from heart disease

If you or a friend cannot get rid of a negative self-concept, talking with a trusted friend, family member, or a therapist may help.
